It appears as if the resistance unions had displayed over the changes the Government were looking to make to pensions has crumbled, this comes three weeks after what was described as the biggest nationwide industrial strike to have hit the country for around three decades. The Coalition Government have come to an agreement with unions on a tentative deal which should remove any threat of further strike action.

Deal is at a very early stage
Danny Alexander, Treasury minister, revealed that the deal is at a very early stage been agreed with most of the unions who were pressuring the Government. The next stage of the deal being finalised would see the leaders take offer back to meetings of their executives, however with there is no certainty that the offer will be accepted.
The only union that has promised to continue the fight has been the militant Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union, who is the representative for approximately 250,000 civil servants and this includes 30,000 coming from Scotland. They have stated that they will pursue further industrial action as it ‘will be necessary’.

The general secretary of PCS, Mark Serwotka, said that everything was essentially the same after the strike on the 30th of November, and that the offer which was tabled by ministers in the Civil Service was lacking.
The deals which have been agreed have come about after negotiations with NHS workers, civil service staff, teachers and local government employees. Until they have been confirmed and accepted everything will remain the same, it is expected that the deals will be approved early next year.

The government had already made concessions to their original deal, and it was hoped that those changes would have been enough to stop industrial action on the 30th of last month. But Alexander revealed in the House of Commons that the Government had agreed a deal that is good for workers, but until there is confirmation of acceptance this will be the second time the Government have had to bend to please unions.
